Reprise Choir Sings, in collaboration with the Vancouver School of Arts and Academics (VSAA - March 19th ONLY), is proud to present Circlesong, a composition by renowned British composer Bob Chilcott. This work explores the complete life cycle through indigenous writings, featuring performances by adult and youth choirs accompanied by a percussion ensemble. Each movement within Circlesong uniquely articulates aspects of love and loss experienced by Native Americans during the westward expansion of the nation.

Circlesong Program & Notes

The talented singers from Reprise Choir and students from VSAA will deliver the Pacific Northwest premiere of Circlesong. The performance will be under the direction of April Duvic and Janet Galbraith from Reprise Choir, alongside Joel Thoreson from VSAA, who will also share conducting and piano responsibilities.

Circlesong is an ambitious musical representation of the human life cycle, inspired by indigenous poetry across North America. The composition, encompassing 13 movements in seven parts, traces life's stages from birth through childhood, adulthood, middle age, and finally, death. This piece is notable for its dramatic depth, emotional variety, and profound respect for Native American wisdom and traditions.

Bob Chilcott is globally recognized as one of the most frequently performed composers and arrangers of choral music. His extensive catalog, published by Oxford University Press, reflects his diverse musical tastes and dedication to creating music that is both singable and emotionally expressive. Chilcott remarks, “A recurring image in the poetry was that of a circle, which became a fascinating motif for me. Musically, the circle represents our world, the sun, and the moon. It symbolizes day and night, seasonal patterns, and the cyclical nature of our environment. Most importantly, the circle signifies our interdependence and unity as a human family.”
